How Does It Work?
VCO to VCO

Voice Carry-Over (VCO): This enables people who have difficulty hearing on the phone to voice their conversation directly to the hearing person. The OPR then types the hearing person's response to the VCO user. VCO can be used with either a TTY or a VCO phone.

Voice Carry-Over (VCO) with Privacy: VCO users can request this feature if they want privacy on their call. With this feature, the OPR drops off during the VCO user's part of the conversation. The VCO user MUST TYPE "GA" at the end of his/her turn voicing. This will bring the OPR back on line to continue relaying the hearing person's response. Simply tell or type to the OPR that you want VCO with Privacy when the call begins.

Two Line VCO and Reverse Two Line VCO: Two Line VCO (2LVCO) makes it possible for both parties --the person who is deaf/hard of hearing and the person who is hearing-- to speak and hear each other while making it possible for the deaf/hard of hearing person to read what the hearing person has said. Plus, there is no need to say "GA" or "Go Ahead."

Two line VCO instructions

  1. Dial the 1-888-826-9673 or 1-888-VCO-WORD

  2. The Relay will send this message: "NBR CALLING PLS GA". There will be no Operator (OPR) on the line at this point.

  3. Type the area code and telephone number you are calling, followed by "VTV GA." Typing this information yourself will speed up your call. If you would rather give the OPR the telephone number verbally, immediately type "VTV PLS GA".

  4. Your call is now transferred to the OPR. His or her identification number and gender ("M" for male or "F" for female) will appear on your display. The OPR will then type "VTV ON GA." You MUST wait for the "GA" before speaking!

  5. When the other VCO user answers, the OPR will announce the fact that it is a VTV call to let your party know that they should speak into the telephone. Remember to speak a little slower than normal, in consideration of the OPR, who will be typing everything you say and unable to ask you to slow down or to repeat your words.

*Note:VCO / TTY USERS NOTE: In order to place a VCO or VTV, your TTY should not be in ASCII mode.
